Post 7??

Good evening Book Club members :) I am just interested in your thoughts on what we would like to do for post #7. Would you still like to get together to record video shots for the final post? Or would you like to do something that we could do independently? I was thinking that BigHugeLabs and other websites offer some interesting ideas that we could do for the final post. For example, we could choose to create a movie poster, or perhaps we could make a trailer for a film version of the book, or maybe we could write a synopsis for a "sequel"? We could choose one idea of we could all choose different formats for the final response. Any thoughts on this? What would you guys like to do for the final post?

  1. Brooke, Hannah and Alex,
Brooke-I think that all of those ideas are great! I think that if we do a video it would be so funny to show to the class and really fun to make! I like the trailer idea, and the sequel as well. I'm down for anything so whatever is easiest for the group as a whole is good for me! =)

  2. I think the videos will be a great idea, although I think all of Brooke's suggestions are awesome too! I will pick out my vignette today and respond again with a description of how we could shoot it.

Can't wait for our Mexican food night and to hear what you all think of this book as a whole!

  3. I agree - I think collaborating on a video would be a really fun and interesting project, like the role-playing/ simulation activities that we discussed in class. It would also be an interesting product to hang on to to show our students an example of what a re-envisioning of a scene might look like. Then, we could all right a short post reflecting on our experience of what it was like to do the scene and get into the heads of the character. I think the reflection is an important element in assignments like this and can be useful in helping students to reflect and really think about the creative processes that they have been engaged with. I am also very excited to meet up with you on the 14th for our cena mexicana!! Any ideas on which restaurant you might want to meet at? You guys all live closer together so maybe you want to meet out towards cheektowaga or West Seneca? Maybe somewhere on Union?

  4. What do you guys think of doing an interpretation of the Four Little Trees vignette? It seems to be one that keeps popping up for us. We could have someone start out with a shot of the four of us, maybe with our arms over our heads like trees, looking sad and worn out. We could then interject images of worn out trees, worn out people, and worn out neighborhoods as one of us reads the vignette over the images. Just a thought - if anyone has any other ideas for how we could represent that passage, I think it could be really powerful. We could include images of strength in the section that writes "They keep and keep and keep." The roots section could also be another powerful piece to represent - we could something cool with the video of ourselves and maybe layover images of roots coming out of our feet? And when the passage talks about one of the trees falling over, we could all grab to reach that person and pull them back up.

Other vignettes that I thought would be fun to shoot: Hips (jumping rope), Family of Little Feet (heels), the Coconut Juice one (which Alex suggested), Our Best Day (with the bike). Another passage we all pulled from was Elenita, where Esperanza is given her fortune that her home is in the "heart." One of us could be Esperanza, one could be Elenita, one could the son who spills kool-aid. Any other ideas?

  5. Hey groupies-
Are we only going to shoot one vigniette? Or are we going to do a series of vigniettes? Since they are all so short I was thinking maybe we could do 2-3 of them in a series to show some of the different major themes in the book. I really like your idea about the four trees Hannah, I think that one could be powerful. I also think the Family of Little Feet (the one with the three girls wearing heels) would be a good one to shoot to represent the issues that Esperanza has with becoming a woman and femininity. Hips would also be a good one to show the same issue. If we wanted to show a vigniette relating to her issue with home, the one with the fortune teller would be a good one to show. Maybe we could choose three to represent those strong themes: Growing up, becoming a woman and finding a home? Or would you rather just choose one and go more in depth? What do you guys think?

  6. Also- if we want to film these, we should plan a date that we could do that. Perhaps on the 14th either before or after our book club meeting? By the way- I don't think I am going to request to work that Monday, so I can probably meet up earlier than we originally planned. Maybe we could meet at UB around 4ish to film the vigniettes then go get some Mexican to discuss the book/ our book club experience together? Any ideas?
